Initiated in 1997 and nestled within the hinterlands of Ubud, Mason Elephant Park was created in response to the devastating situation in Sumatra where rampant deforestation and poaching has ruined the elephant population. This multi-award-winning park is Bali’s only dedicated elephant rescue facility that supports the island’s largest herd of critically endangered Sumatran elephants. Visitors to the park have the rare opportunity to get up close and personal to hand feed, wash, bathe, ride and learn all about these amazing creatures, all while giving the healthy herd a comfortable and safe environment to call home. Once an abandoned rice field, in 1997 the park has been carefully landscaped into a lush botanical setting with numerous koi ponds, giant tortoises, and hundreds of plant and orchid species.
