When staying at Suara Alam Ubud, there’s no rush to wake up. Instead of alarm clocks, the only sound coaxing sleepers out of bed is the faint chirping of birds (if there are any, even) or the gentle stream of a gurgling brook. Sometimes, it’s nothing more than the pleasant undulations of leaves rustling in the cool highland breezes. Nothing less is to be expected out of a resort whose name literally means sounds of nature. The design also harmonises with the natural landscapes around it, featuring sulur motifs, tendrils of swirling, arabesque patterns commonly found in traditional Indonesian architecture, etched onto its stone walls. Much of its space exists in union with the outdoors, including the doorless spa chamber and the circular and triangular pools that jut out over the leafy ravine. The bedrooms, while indoors, emulate a similar atmosphere with their pristine desert-style interiors in all their plastered, rattan-accented glory. By nightfall, the chitter of cicadas underscores romantic candlelit dinners if guests so wish, a prelude to a good night’s sleep that would extend to the next morning’s absence of wake-up calls.
